HAMERKOP is a climate consultancy! We offer technical consulting services around 3 main pillars: supporting climate change mitigation projects, providing expert advice on the carbon markets, and aiding with climate-related policy.

Who are your founders and what is the origin story of the company?

HAMERKOP was born from a simple idea: carbon markets should do more than reduce emissions – they should deliver real benefits for people and nature. We saw a gap in the market for a truly independent, technical partner that could help project developers, NGOs, governments, and international organisations navigate the complexity of carbon finance – and unlock its full potential.

Too many climate solutions are stuck in spreadsheets and boardrooms. We bring our boots (and brains) to the field – where carbon markets meet real impact.

Named after a clever, determined African bird, HAMERKOP is just as resourceful and persistent – helping build a better carbon market, one project at a time.

Do you have a claim to fame moment, a proudest moment or time you made it into the news?

We’ve had a few proud moments — publishing our first guidebooks (The Carbon Projects Handbook and The Reforest Better Guide), opening our Singapore office, winning “Best Carbon Market Consultancy,” working with clients like the World Bank, UN agencies, and Netflix, and building an extraordinary team. But truth be told, it’s the field visits that steal the show.

From crossing mangrove swamps in Cameroon and consulting communities in Senegal’s Sahel, to surveying Miombo forests in Zambia and working with women-led groups in refugee camps in Sudan and Chad — these are the frontlines of climate action.

And every time we support these efforts, we’re reminded why we do what we do. That’s what makes us proud.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a company?

Convincing people that carbon markets aren’t just smoke and mirrors. Building trust, one project and one client at a time, in a market that moves fast and sometimes breaks things. Also: explaining to our families what we actually do for a living. Still working on that one.

Do you have a favourite spot in Clerkenwell for lunch or drinks after work?

We used to work near Leather Lane, so we all have our favourite food stall there… Now we’re getting to know Exmouth Market and have recently enjoyed our first visit to Mikkeller!
